Chapter Sixteen

“Oh come on, you don’t really believe this is some kind of elaborate joke, do you? How much are they paying you to say that?” the spiky-haired man raved, occupying his usual square on the cable news channel.

“They’re gone, Martin,” the woman with the huge black frames yelled in an exaggeratedly slow, loud voice. She’d made sure to over pronounce each syllable as if comprehension were his problem.

“Let’s take a minute and hear from the people on the street, shall we?” the host interrupted with her rhetorical question as if the guests had a choice.

The video feed cut to a man in a baseball cap with a black microphone in his face. “Yeah, um, there ain’t no way vampires would be real and we’d only just be findin’ out. A lotta people are doin’ weird things to go viral these days. Everyone’s lookin’ for those fifteen minutes, you know?”

The camera moved to the other young man at his side. “Nah man, that shit was aliens,” he said excitedly.

“Aliens?” A third in the group, and the shortest of them all, sucked his teeth as he disparaged his friends guess. “That shit was the Russians. They’ve developed some muthafucking bioweapons and they were testin’ that shit out. What we saw was like the byproduct and shit. They had to track ‘em down and kill ‘em like a messed up science experiment. It’s the Russians that started sayin’ they were vampires. Why do you think that is? It’s a cover-up,” he said in answer to his own question.

“That ain’t true, man, and that doesn’t make no damn sense—”

The video cut back to the three guests featured in three squares. The spiky-haired pundit was undeterred. “All of these crazy ideas are just meant to throw us off the scent. What about the wolves? Are those made up too?”

A previously silent man, his thinning hair slicked back and sticking to his skull, seized his opportunity. “Vampires and werewolves, if that doesn’t sound like Hollywood to you, I don’t know what will.”

“Here we go with this old chestnut,” the spiky-haired man said with a roll of his eyes. “Next you’re going to say Jax was promoting a movie and it was all a stunt.”

“Well, if it wasn’t a stunt, where is he then? He sure has been flying under the radar ever since. And is it just a coincidence that his movie has been the highest-grossing of the summer?”

“Maybe whatever got the vampires got him too,” the spiky-haired man challenged. “It would make sense.”

“You know what makes more sense?” the woman with the glasses interrupted. “That it’s for publicity. Let’s look at the video of him shifting,” she added in a mocking tone.

The image of the talking heads was replaced by a werewolf in mid-transition. His shift was played in extremely slow motion while the woman continued talking. “Right here,” she said at the jump in the video. “That’s where you can see the green screen. This is obviously a good exercise in CGI and graphic design.
